Letter written by Bonnie Many thanks for the order ( Written at top of letterhead ) Supply Okla. June 14, 1933 Dear Burrel and Jo, Will try to write a few lines to say yes I am at home; I had pen on hand last eve just ready to write this when the boy came with your ever-welcome letter. Was sure so happy to hear from you. I had waited to write you until would get home. I went to Enid on 10:30 bus from Bison. I had made inquiries about what time bus would leave Enid. Only one leaving at 12:40 so I went up to be on time to be sure to get off. And lo in meantime they had quit going to Woodward, but there were autos running in view and made connection with Wichita Falls, so I came right on home without any more trouble, and Maud brought me up home. Sure if you could see this God-forsaken country and town you would never come this way anymore, simply burnt up, worse than it ever was in August, any other year. Nothing to harvest and all the gardens gone. No grass or even weeds in the yard. Sunday was a dreadful hot day, and I went ( to ) church in Woodward, also the funeral held at Callaway's Funeral Home. Mrs. McKelvy passed away last Wednesday, so I thought would like to go down, but did not see Mr. McKelvy but the sons Rolla of Oklahoma City and Wayne from Denver and families were there. The yards in Woodward don't look as if they had plenty of water. Seen Mrs. Stretcher, she has been sick, don't look well as usual. Well I found everything almost ( ? ) all right, only your little wood file is gone. The windmill part of it was blown down and don't work yet. Don't know who fixed it yet. Ray said had to take it to Scotts to have it fixed, but it don't work yet. I have no phone, said the phone people broke in and took it down, so don't try to phone. As for the light bill I had no lights 1 st night but Call Pratt came out next day and fixed them as he is the man now instead of Messall since the election. By the way, why is your Woodward paper still coming? Maud asked me 1 st eve would I take the paper, and I thought it was the magazine so I guess the paper has been coming all the time and here Twila is sending her paper to you altime ( all the time? ), and you had better had your own paper if you will have to pay for it. I will not take it out anymore, perhaps that will stop it. You asked about my box, no I don't need it but if you get a chance, send it by Jessers ( ? ). It will save postage. I am in no hurry. I want Jo to go to Montgomery Wards and see the quilting frames they advertise for 98 cents and write me what they consist of – two long pieces and two short or long ones, and the corner clamps. I was so long coming home Mrs. Mitch is now using hers. And send me some good ( foot? ) powder. Don't know when will get to Woodward. Don't send very expensive powder. O yes you had better send the key to garage as I will need it. Ira ( ? ) came this eve for your add ( address? ), so guess you will get some news, as he said had some business with you. Sam the rascal, why didn't he come by. It would have saved several dollars for one. Well I don't burn any lights and to go bed early to save them. So long, love to both. Lovingly as ever, Mama |
